Referee & Leadership Training Program

Whistle While You Work is a GKNY Mentor Program initiative that uses basketball officiating to teach leadership, confidence, and life skills. We introduce youth to refereeing as a real pathway to jobs, mentorship, and community impact—long before most people ever hear that “referee” can be a career.

Across the country, there’s a serious referee shortage—officials are aging out, there’s not enough diversity, and young people rarely see officiating as an option. At the same time, many kids lose access to organized sports as they get older and need new ways to stay connected, supported, and inspired. Our program answers both needs by turning officiating into a door to leadership and opportunity.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower youth, young adults, and seniors through sports, education, and community engagement—helping them grow as players, leaders, and future officials who strengthen the communities they come from.
